Each of these 6 chords is a jazz or gospel-flavoured extension of a dominant, major or minor 7th. The interval formula (in semitones from the root) decides which kind you hear:
Dominant 7â¯9: 0, 4, 7, 10, 15
Dominant 7â9: 0, 4, 7, 10, 13
Dominant 7â¯5: 0, 4, 8, 10
Major 7â¯11: 0, 4, 7, 11, 18
Minor 9: 0, 3, 7, 10, 14
Major 6/9: 0, 4, 7, 9, 14
The two altered dominants (â¯9 and â9) share the same tense 3-7-10 core but differ in their upper extension; Dominant 7â¯5 raises the 5th instead of adding an upper extension; Major 7â¯11 stacks a bright raised 11th two octaves above the root; Minor 9 and Major 6/9 both add a smooth 9th on top of a simpler underlying chord.
Use the Reference Chords at any time to re-orient your ear â they always play all 6 kinds regardless of your active settings.
